5 tracks for Friday (week2)
Every Friday, we’ll be posting "5 tracks for Friday".
Tracks from past and present that caught our ears during the week in terms of quality and vibe…as simple as that.
Thinkin Bout You by Flea
Label - Nonesuch Records.
Year - 2026
The track is actually a deeply personal instrumental reimagining of Frank Ocean's 2012 Channel Orange R&B masterpiece. Flea completely strips away the original’s sleek R&B production and falsetto vocals, stepping up to instead perform the iconic vocal melody himself on a melancholic, soulful lead trumpet. Backed by Anna Butterss' woody upright bass and a sweeping, cinematic string orchestration arranged by Nate Walcott, Flea transforms Ocean's vulnerable bedroom ballad into a mournful, late-night jazz-ambient lament that highlights just how timelessly beautiful the underlying melody is.
M.P.B. (Missing Persons Bureau) by Womack & Womack
Label - Island Records
Year - 1989
Originally released as a standout single from the acclaimed album Conscience, the specific version featured in the link is the highly sought-after "Paradise Ballroom Mix," which was released on 12-inch vinyl in 1989. Built on an addictive, slow-churning synth-bass pulse and anchored by a beautiful, syncopated live percussion pocket, the track is a brilliant masterclass in late-80s dance-pop and soulful house. Seamlessly blending classic R&B vocal storytelling with a club-ready groove, the song chronicles the desperate, heartbreaking search for a lost love who has completely vanished into thin air. What makes the Paradise Ballroom Mix so legendary is the way it stretches the arrangement.
Let Me Down Easy by Rare Pleasure
Label - Cheri Records
Year - 1976
A stone-cold classic of the underground 1970s loft and club scenes, "Let Me Down Easy" is a masterclass in driving, soulful orchestral disco. The track is propelled by an infectious, endlessly looping bassline and crisp, syncopated percussion that acts as a perfect bed for its vibrant, soaring brass hits and dramatic string arrangements. At the heart of the track is a powerful, emotionally raw vocal performance that pleads for honesty and gentleness at the tail-end of a failing relationship. Known for its immaculate arrangement and incredible dancefloor kineticism, the track has maintained an enduring legacy across multiple generations of dance music culture and was famously sampled by house pioneer David Morales.
Perfect Day (Piano Komorebi Version) by Patrick Watson
Label - Secretly Distribution
Year - 2024
The piece is a gorgeous, melancholic instrumental cover of Lou Reed's iconic 1972 rock classic, specially arranged and recorded to serve as the structural emotional heartbeat of director Wim Wenders' critically acclaimed film, Perfect Days. Stripping away all of Reed's original brass, strings, and dark lyrical sneer, Watson reduces the song to an intimately mic'd, solo acoustic upright piano performance. The "Komorebi" tag in the title,a Japanese word translating to the distinct visual phenomenon of sunlight filtering through the leaves of trees, mirrors the performance style; Watson plays with a soft, slow-burning rhythmic rubato, letting the natural acoustic hum, creaks, and mechanical spaces of the piano frame the timeless melody with a heavy, tear-jerking sense of peace and everyday bittersweet nostalgia.
Villa Mariana (De Tarde) by Azymuth
Label - 2016
Year -Far Out
Clocking in at just over six minutes, “Villa Mariana (De Tarde)” is pure sun-soaked Azymuth, featuring that signature “samba doido” sound they made their own, where jazz-funk, cosmic fusion and Brazilian groove all melt together effortlessly. Produced by Daniel Maunick, the track feels like late afternoon in Rio: warm air, golden light, movement everywhere. Alex Malheiros’ bassline carries the whole thing with this fluid, rolling energy, locked tightly into Ivan Conti’s crisp, syncopated drums. What really lifts it into another space, though, is Kiko Continentino’s Rhodes and synth work, layering psychedelic textures and jazz-funk colour over the groove without ever overcrowding it
