Case Study - Syncing music for a Tiff-winning indie film

Client: Bravo Charlie

Media: Film

Director: Sophie Dupuis

Context: The creative vision for Solo demanded a sonic identity that felt both prestigious and authentically rooted in club culture. For a film that explores the blurred lines between performance and personal identity, "Groovejet" was identified as a vital tonal anchor.

Artist: Spiller

Track: Groovejet

The Film “Solo”

Directed by Sophie Dupuis, Solo (2023) is a visceral romantic drama set against the neon-soaked, high-energy backdrop of the Montreal drag scene. The film stars Théodore Pellerin as Simon, an emerging performer whose life becomes a turbulent balancing act between a toxic romance and the arrival of his estranged mother, an opera singer who abandoned him years prior. The film earned significant critical acclaim, winning the prestigious Best Canadian Film award at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and being named to Canada's Top Ten list for 2023.

The Soundtrack

The soundtrack for Solo is a heavy hitter, moving between the high-energy polished tracks to more raw, stripped-back sounds to emphasise the characters' lives. With heavy hitters like ABBA, Chaka Khan, and Donna Summer all featured. Iconic House track, Groovejet by Italian DJ/producer Spiller, carries its own legacy and helps set a strong tone for the film while sitting perfectly between massive, recognisable pop anthems and the underground sounds that make the movie’s club scene feel real.

Light On’s role

  • De-Risking the Production: By handling the end-to-end clearance process, we provided a legal "shield" that allowed the film to move from its TIFF premiere to international theatrical distribution without licensing friction.

  • Direct Licensing Control: Streamlining the licensing process, giving the production direct access to a world-class IP without the usual administrative friction of a major global hit.
